Mental health centre in Canada plans to go smoke free in July. Canada’s largest mental –health facility, the centre for Addiction and mental health has already banned smoking indoors.
The facility also emphasizes that the ban will be completely implemented, if the patients are willing to support. This law has almost taken 10 years to be put into practice.
From July even the patients as well as the staff will be disallowed to smoke, on any one of their three properties, which are located, downtown Toronto. They are not emphasizing on quitting but to just refrain the patients and staff to smoke on their premises.
This will be a little difficult for mentally ill patients as nicotine has more sedative effect than the general population. According to a study conducted at the centre, almost 75 to 90% patients use tobacco.
CAHM will implement at 100% smoke free policy. In the facility, some patients also suffer from schizophrenia. As compared to the general population, their life expectancy is lower. With introductions of such laws, facility just wants to create a suitable and supportive environment.
This law has been enforces in the best possible motive. People suffering with psychiatric disorders need to maintain their health in order to maintain physical as well as mental stability.
