WHO Cautions Against Risk of Untreatable Gonorrhea

The World Health Organization forwarded a chain of warnings on Thursday, stating that gonorrhea might shortly become non curable, only if urgent actions are taken to avert and treat the sexually transmitted infection.

WHO stated that incorrect usage of antibiotics has resulted in prevalent antimicrobial resistance to the infection, with cheaper and first-line antibiotics, failing to be effective enough to prevent the disease.

If this continues, it would not take much time before gonorrhea develops resistance to third-generation cephalosporin.

Australia, China's Hong Kong and Japan, all have reported of cases of treatment failures, with oral cephalosporin, which is at present used in the last-line treatment of gonorrhea.

Dr. Shin Young-soo, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific said that they are trying to deal with a grave concern, with the allegation that gonorrhea might soon become non curable.

Gonorrhea is a widespread sexually transmitted infection that is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoea, which is also known as Gonococcus.

If left untreated, it can possibly result in sterility, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, infections in infants, urethral strictures and scrotal swelling.
