Cellphone Application Responsible for Sexual Assault

By making use of a new mobile GPS technology designed to help gay men hook up, a 54-year-old Vancouver man allegedly assaulted a 15-year-old North Vancouver youngster, for which he has been arrested.

Charges of sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and sexual assault have been levied against the 54 year old Brent Tynan, revealed RCMP Cpl. Marlene Morton on Tuesday.

The suspect met the 15 year old youth via a social networking application called Grindr that connects users to gay and bisexual men who are in close proximity. It works on mobile devices that have a built-in GPS function, in order to determine the accurate location of the user and immediately connect them with other men.

Grindr's website says 'Meet guys at home or on the road for free'. Grindr displays photos and personal information about men who have signed up, including the chatting and message functions.

Parents should keep a strict eye on their kids, urged Morton.

She said, "I can't say how important it is to know who your kids are going out with and what they're doing. Any 54-year-old person -- unless they're a soccer or hockey coach or a teacher -- why would they want to hang out with a young teen?".
