Government Not to Implement Internet Filtering Prior to Next Election

It has been reported that the Federal Government has discarded all allegations to bring in compulsory internet filtering prior to the next election.

This comes much before the legislation is introduced in the parliament. A spokesperson, for the Communications Minister Stephen Conroy revealed that the Government will continue to be committed to the policy.

Labor party claims that the internet filter is required to block access to content such as child pornography and illegal material. It was reported that the promise to introduce the filter prior to the election is incorrect.

She said that the Government is dedicated to the cyber safety policy.

It was also said that the Department has been collaborating with other government agencies to take into consideration the submission on this filter policy. It would also analyze whether the suggestions related to this policy could increase accountability and bring in transparency.

"Opposition against the internet filter is widespread because it will do precisely nothing to curb the distribution of illegal material online, while establishing the architecture for greater government censorship in the future," Senator Ludlam said.
