The Turkish-German drama, "When We Leave" and the Down’s syndrome romance documentary, "Monica & David" fetched top honors at the ninth annual Tribeca Film Festival.
"When We Leave" that stars Sibel Kekilli as a mother who elopes from her violent husband by shifting with her 5-year-old son from Istanbul to Berlin, bragged the best narrative feature. Kekilli also grabbed the Best actress award.
The judges, who decided the category that comprised actors Hope Davis and Aaron Eckhart, said in a statement that "When We Leave" observes one woman's efforts for individual freedom. It's a topic that is often explored, but seldom narrated with such compassion, subtlety, craftsmanship or propinquity.
Best documentary was won by "Monica & David". It records the love between two people suffering from Down’s syndrome. Alexandra Codina, Monica's cousin directed the documentary.
Eric Elmosnino took the Best actor award in a narrative feature film. He played the French composer, Serge Gainsbourg in "Gainsbourg, Je t'Aime ... Moi Non Plus".
The festival also recognized two new filmmakers, Kim Chapiron, the Director of the youth correctional facility drama, "Dog Pound", and Clio Barnard, the Director of the British documentary-fiction hybrid, "The Arbor".
The awards were given out on Thursday evening at an event in New York.
