Food and Drug Administration Denies Request of Removal of Panelists

The Cigarette giant Philip Morris claims that the FDA has eliminated the possibility of removing its four panel members. The intentions of removing the four panel members came after a series of crashed conflicts. The four members also had been nominated as they also had financial conflicts. They also had served as paid expert witnesses for plaintiffs in litigation. The litigation was against tobacco companies.

The four panel members were Jack Henningfield, Neal Benowitz, Gregory Connolly and Jonathan Samet.

The parent group of Philip Morris, Altria Group Inc. reported it quarter's financial report this Wednesday. FDA refused to eradicate the four members of the panel as the FDA believes in having the balanced composition of scientific mind to ensure, that complex tobacco related issues can be handled in an enhanced manner.

By removing the four panelists, cigarette giant Philip Morris wants to maintain the credibility of the panel, which was severely hampered by the litigation. Acting as paid expert witnesses for plaintiffs, their move was an attempt to almost cripple the cigarette industry.

Dr. Jonathan Samet is also reported to charge an amount of $300 for an hour. A pharmaceutical company, which makes products which help people to quit smoking, has also given grants to Dr. Samet for his participation. To this news, Dr. Samet has paid all the money to John Hopkins University, where he previously used to study.
