Kootenay West MLA Katrine Conroy to Sacrifice One Kidney

In a “domino” transplant, Kootenay West MLA Katrine Conroy will be sacrificing one of her kidneys, so that her husband Ed can get a similar kidney from another donor.

She said, “I wanted to donate a kidney, but I'm not compatible with my husband. But I can donate to someone I am compatible with and, in exchange, they find a compatible match for him”.

There are six people involved in the case, in which three are recipients and three are donors. The 52 year old Conroy, of Castlegar stated that it will all be done on the same day. The three people that need kidney transplant will be able to get it that very day.

Her husband had served as a Kootenay West MLA for 10 years. He had undergone two liver transplants and his kidneys were damaged by strong anti-rejection drugs. Conroy will fly to Ontario for her surgery, while Ed waits in hospital in Vancouver. She will be away from the B. C. legislature for about one month.

Conroy shared that she can live happily with one kidney only and that helping Ed in getting a new kidney will make a huge difference to her family.
