Deputy Prime Minister, Gillard says that a new mandatory mesothelioma registry will more accurately detail information about sickness victims, whose numbers have been under-reported.
On Friday, Ms. Gillard introduced the Australian Mesothelioma Registry, saying that it was a huge advance on the voluntary system formerly in place.
The registry will gather thorough information regarding patients, like when and where the ailment might have been developed.
It will then be utilized by specialists to follow asbestos contact, so authorities can cope with future possibilities.
Ms. Gillard told the launch, held at the Bernie Banton Centre at Sydney's Concord Hospital, "We ... want to make sure that as mesothelioma cases come to light from past exposure, we know where that past exposure was, so that any remaining risks can be dealt with".
He said that part of ensuring that they can battle with this disease is having the maximum possible information about who is contracted with it, and what exposure they had, which led to the sickness.
He said that the registry will work with their agencies across the nation, which copes with cancer, so they can bring collectively, in one place, the best possible information.
Ms. Gillard added that the voluntary system had not reported the occurrence of mesothelioma correctly.
