A new research implies that over 12,000 Victorians think of committing suicide every year, due to their addiction with poker machine gambling.
Around 6000 consider flouting the law owing to problems caused by playing pokies.
A key study involving 15,000 Victorians discovered that the frequency of problem gambling in Victoria is the most horrible in the nation.
The 12-month study, A Study of Gambling in Victoria Problem Gambling from a Public Health Perspective, was sponsored by the Department of Justice and made public in September last year.
It revealed that over 27% of addictive persons and 6% of moderate risk gamblers confessed to contemplating taking their own lives.
The study says that there are around 117,000 problem and moderate risk gamblers in Victoria.
And 15.17%problem gamblers and 3.46%moderate risk said that their gambling forced them to do something, which is officially against the law.
The findings of the study revealed that problem gamblers were notably more liable to have contemplated taking their own life, compared to moderate risk gamblers and were also considerably more prone to have done something, which is legally against the law.
Anti-pokies Activist, Paul Bendat said that the study unmistakably exhibited the need for change in the gaming industry.
Mr. Bendat, who owns the Pokieact website said, "I was shocked by the enormity of the number".
