Better Awareness Key in Restraining Autism Disorder

A lot of people might have seen Shahrukh Khan portraying the role of an autistic person in a recent Bollywood blockbuster ‘My Name is Khan,’ but only some, would be aware of the April 2 World Autism Day, which passed on in hush this year, just like preceding years.

Lack of awareness amongst public is the simple reason for this. Word about this neural development disorder, which hampers one’s social contact and communication doesn’t reach everybody’s ears.

Health specialists think that enhanced public consciousness of autism is vital in restraining its increase through early prognosis and involvements.

Dr. Saima Ejaz, an Intensive Behavior Therapy Consultant, said that in Pakistan, only few know about the autism disorder. So, improved awareness of the disorder could assist people, particularly parents and teachers, respond more positively and efficiently to patients suffering from autism.

According to Saima, “Early diagnosis is very critical. It brings dramatic positive results to children with autism”.

She also said that she sought better sensitization of pediatricians and psychologists to autism and proper involvements for its timely treatment.

Repeating the message of this year’s World Autism Day, Dr. Saima said, “we all need to stand up for autism”.
