It was reported that around 12,000 elderly Singaporeans participated in a national health screening exercise over the last two years. After the results, it was noticed that around 9,000 people that is around 75% of them were detected with risk to their health.

In the National Wellness Programme, Goh Chok Tong who is the Senior Minister informed that these people were having indications of chronic ailments.

"If we detect these symptoms early, such as high body mass index, high blood pressure, high sugar level and high cholesterol level, we can take active steps to try to reduce the likelihood of more serious conditions such as heart attack, stroke or kidney failure," said Goh Chok Tong.

However, Mr. Goh was happy about the fact that people were detected with high risk and had received health advice from the doctors.

The symptoms were seen in elders who were 65 years old or more and the elders who were living all by themselves.

From the studies it was seen that in 1965, the life expectancy was 64.5 years whereas, now it is 80.9 years.

An increase was also seen in the number of elderly HDB residents. In 2003, there were 14,300 whereas 2008 there were 22,000.
