The police have arrested all the four suspects involved in the gang rape of a 28-year-old woman, in the San Francisco Bay area. The four of them - two men and two teens, allegedly taunted the woman for being a lesbian, and attacked her with a blunt object when she got out of her car, which had a rainbow gay pride sticker.
One man, Humberto Hernandez Salvador, 31, and the two teens - a 15-year-old Richmond boy and a 16-year-old Hercules boy - were arrested on Wednesday, following tips from local residents; while the second man, Josue Gonzalez, 21, turned himself in to police on Thursday, after the authorities announced they were searching for him.
Though the police did not detail the alleged involvement of each of the suspects individually, Richmond police Lt. Mark Gagan said all the four of them were wanted on charges of gang rape, kidnapping and carjacking.
According to the detectives, after one of the men struck the woman in the street, he asked her to undress, and the four of them sexually assaulted her. On seeing someone approaching, the alleged assailants forced the woman back into her car, and took her to a burned-out apartment building. There they raped her again inside and outside the vehicle. Later, they took her wallet and drove off in her car, leaving her unclothed near the building.
The authorities have characterized the case as a hate crime. Gagan said: "We feel that while these four suspects were at large, a large cross-section of our population felt unsafe."
