The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy has made an announcement that he is going to extend the registration period on the Do Not Call Register to five years, which is three years presently.
As per Conroy's proposed alteration to the Do Not Call Register Amendment Bill 2009, which is at present before parliament, any person who registered their phone numbers in 2007 would not require to reregister until 2012.
Conroy said that the existing rule demands to re-register their phone numbers every three years. He said that amendment made in the bylaws will make sure that it is helpful for people to stop getting harassed and be free from the problem of re-registering their phone numbers in every three years time.
The Do Not Call Register helps in blocking calls that are made by telemarketing services, as they are not given the access to landline and cell phones of people.
ACMA Chairman, Chris Chapman stated that no less than 39% of land line phone numbers and approximately 43% of mobile phone numbers have been reregistered. This is an incredible result.
It strongly shows that Australians desire to have the alternative of blocking unwanted telemarketing calls and not be interrupted and irritated on the home phone or the mobile, by getting calls from these telemarketing services.
