Darryl McCauley, 43, half brother to comedian Dane Cook, has pleaded not guilty to charges that include forgery and larceny. Held on a $3 million bail, he is accused of embezzling millions from Cook.
A former Burger King manager and prison guard, McCauley acted as his brother's business manager for Great Dane Enterprises Inc. and was paid $150,000 a year to handle Cook's income and expenses. Prosecutors say by early 2007, McCauley began to steadily siphon off money, sometimes as much as $500,000 at a time, transferring funds from Cook's business accounts to his own personal account, including writing out a $3-million cheque from Cook's account to himself.
While, McCauley's lawyer insists on the innocence of his client, Cook has been described as being 'very distraught'. Investigations reveal that McCauley stole $10.5-million from his famous sibling over the past 17-months. He used the money to buy four cars, take a seven day trip across the country, flying including renting cars along the way with the stolen money.
A raid on his Maine home, found $800,000 in cash, stashed in a safe in the house. McCauley's wife, Erika stated the money was her earnings from her make-up boutique in a nearby hotel. However, according to Asst. Attorney General Rick Grundy, 'That's not consistent with her tax statements.' As well, Grundy reveals McCauley was often heard talking about his wish to open a restaurant in Ireland .
A shocking tale of brotherly betrayal, Cook, 36, suspected his brother of stealing from him, for some time now. Only recently, he decided to hire a California-based manager, and asked McCauley to hand over all business files and documents in his possession. McCauley sent the files, but not before he wrote out a $3-million cheque in his name, forging Cook's signature.
Family relations aren't so funny now for Cook, who despite all seems to be doing well, his comedy album 'Retaliation' went double platinum, and with roles in several films, he has also starred in 'My Best Friend's Girl' with Kate Hudson.
