The Environment Minister has stressed that conservation efforts across Ontario now seriously need to shift to cars and trucks which have managed to collectively become the biggest utilizers of energy in the province.
Minister Gord Miller asserted that so much of attention has been paid to energy use at residences that lately, transportation has simply been forgotten. With fuel prices set to rise in the coming times, Mr. Miller said that the Government and industry should seriously consider expansion of rail transit.
"No question, going forward I think we are going to regret our dependence on diesel trucks to deliver our goods. The energy efficiency of rail is far higher than trucks. But the incentive has not been there -- the province pays for the highways, they don't pay for the rails. It's not a level playing field", he said.
Mr. Miller also said that the Government could also put in more efforts to minimize the impact and overall effects of automobiles.
He shared that carpooling is one of the best options when it comes to conservation of fuel.
