Kids Attend Emergency Preparedness Week Event

Elementary students attending an Emergency Preparedness Week kickoff event yesterday morning suggested that muffins should not be included in a 72-hour emergency kit, aimed to alert citizens to store food and emergency items to see them through disaster.

"We're trying to promote personal and family preparedness, so things like having family plans for emergencies that might come your way - fire, a power outage, to more serious things like tornados or floods", said Dave Galea, Director of the City's Office of Emergency Preparedness.

It is reported that 1,000 plus students and staff from adjacent elementary schools St. Maria Goretti and Hawkwood were accompanied by an emergency services personnel.

Grade 5 students were given a challenge to put together their own 72-hour emergency kit. The top kits were chosen to be shown in the event.

It is advices that each and every home should possess a 72-hour emergency preparedness kit, containing items including food, water, a radio, a flashlight and other emergency supplies.

It is uncovered that nearly sixteen thousand copies of the Household Emergency Action Plan booklet is planned to be distributed to all students and staff in the public and separate systems by May starting.
