In Melbourne it was seen lately that hundreds of Telstra workers went on a strike to complain against the telco’s negative response to grant better pay conditions for unionized members.
It was seen that Telstra workers and members from the Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union marched through Melbourne’s city-centre Telstra T-Life store which was on the corner of Bourke and Swanston streets. Dozens of police was there and watched the strike taking place.
It was informed by Len Cooper, CEPU divisional President that approximately 500 Telstra workers joined the Melbourne strike and another 500 workers from country frontlines stopped their work as well.
It was informed by Telstra that in the Melbourne protest around 200 workers were involved.
"Telstra would say that wouldn’t they. No, we had many more than 200. Our members have voted unanimously against the Telstra offer and in favor of carrying on the industrial action", said Mr. Cooper.
He added that the Telstra employees had planned a similar strike in other states. It was notified by Telstra that they were planning to reach an agreement with the union.
In the offer the pay would be increased by 8% over two years and the annual performance bonuses would also be given up to 2.5% per year.
Craig Middleton, Telstra spokesman said that they had paid entitled employees a 2% pay increase and the 2.5% cash bonus. He added that the final offer that Telstra had given was reasonable and justified.
