Failed Update Held Responsible for Telstra Next G outage

It has been unveiled by Telstra that today in Queensland a substandard update led the statewide outage in its Next G mobile network.

Telstra and Ericsson engineers and support cohorts of both the firms stay on the ground in Queensland in order to settle the problems.

"While they were planned, these changes unexpectedly created issues in the 850MHz mobile phone network serving Queensland, the changes made to the network overnight are being reversed and Telstra technical experts and equipment vendors are working to completely restore services," a Telstra spokesman said this afternoon.

According to the spokesman the matter had no concerns with a worldwide raise to DNS security overnight (DNSSEC).

At the end of last week, tests were run by iTnews readers on the DNS server addresses of Telstra Mobile network, which were state-based and found some to be non-compliant with DNSSEC.

On the other hand, iTnews was given an assurance by Telstra that during that period it did not wait for any impact on consumers from the DNSSEC upgrade.

It has been said that consumers of Telstra's Queensland have been told that older 2G and 3G networks are not affected. Consumers who are dependent on these networks can still exchange calls and SMS, but with a slower data speed.
