January is the Blood Donor Month; an apt way to usher in the new year. Donating blood takes just an hour out of the routine time. But it can give years of happiness and life to a person in need of blood.
January has been considered as the National Blood Donor Month since 1970.
According to the American Association of Blood Banks, now known as AABB, there is a requirement of about 39,000 units of blood in the United States every day.
The AABB, the American Red Cross and America’s Blood Centers work in collaboration with an objective to help those in need of blood. Winters especially need a constant supply of blood to frequent cases of illness, accidents, and unforeseen weather conditions.
According to the CEO of America’s Blood Centers, Jim MacPherson, the store of blood needs to be replenished regularly as blood has a shelf life of only 42 days. So it is very important that people donate blood regularly.
Anybody above the age of 17 can donate blood. But the donor must be at least 110 pounds; not suffering from any infection or taking antibiotics. A donor can repeat blood donation after 8 weeks.

January is the National Blood Donor Month and let's Start the New Years right by donating blood. We should be aware that Blood bank shortages kill tons of people and about every two seconds someone in the USA needs blood.
