Ottawa Hospital Return Back to Bargain Table

It was seen that the Ottawa Hospital had planned to go back to the bargaining table with its unionized workers. It has said that the deal which came out in March is no longer possible because of the province wide belt tightening.

In March it was noticed that the hospital finalized a deal with the Canadian Union of Public Employees on a 3 year deal, which would have offered annual increase in compensation of 2% at a total cost of $7.1 million.

Whereas, after two weeks it was seen that McGuinty government listed a budget that was based on no increases in collective bargaining agreements in the future. It also listed that no deals were supposed to be longer than two years. It was notified that the budget demanded for an increase of 1.5% to hospital funding.

"With no additional provincial funding for salary increases beyond March 25, 2010, we could only pay for higher salaries through a combination of staff, program and patient care reductions", said hospital Executive, Michael Cuddihy in his statement on Friday.

It was informed by the hospital that it would work with the government and CUPE to protect a new agreement that was in agreement with the direction of the 2010 provincial budget.
