Maybe no show could have exceeded the expectations attached to this week's Saturday Night Liveby the Facebook campaign, which got Betty White her first anchoring offer after a 35-year long wait.
And in the impressive scheme of things, one-and-a-half hour spent with White still looks exciting rather than spending time with anybody else, simply because fondness for her makes even the most horrible show appear a little good.
White admitted that when she first heard about the Facebook campaign to get her to host 'Saturday Night Live,' she didn't know what Facebook was.
“Now that I DO know what it is, I have to say: It seems like a huge waste of time", she said with an impish smile.
Sponsored by NBC as a special Mother's Day episode, the show certainly had a feminine tenor and was a get-together of types for "SNL" graduates, bringing back ex-regulars together with Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon.
"I'm not new to live TV", she reminded the viewers at the top of the show, and remembered that she had starred in a sitcom, which was televised live back in 1952.
However, in the end, Saturday's over publicized NBC broadcast mainly served to elucidate why SNL appeared so unwilling to bring White on the show. Maybe they were not sure what to do with her.
That’s why she was asked to make some blue jokes, put up with the burden of numerous “isn’t she old” jokes, and prepare for the forthcoming MacGruber flick, and then utters some more blue jokes.
Though, it is sure to give the audience some rib tickling moments, 90 minutes is certainly a long duration. Betty has a good fan following to boast of, but the audiences still expect a great deal from her.
It seems that after a 35-years wait, Betty was definitely worthy of a better platform.
