New Pill on the Block- Bayer’s Natazia Gets FDA Nod

Despite the innumerable options available of oral contraceptives, reports claim that about half of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unintended and 22% of pregnancies end in abortion.

The use of the pill has always been controversial and the debate whether the pills are safe or not never seems to end. Yet, pharmaceutical companies are fighting to come up with the best pill that proves to be the safest and the most efficient way to combat unwanted pregnancy.

The new pill on the block is The Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals’ Natazia. The brand new contraceptive has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The nod provides one more option of oral contraception for women.

Company reports claim that the pill is the first to offer doses of progestin and estrogen. The dosage varies at four times throughout the 28-day treatment cycle.

To check the effectiveness of Natazia, two studies with the sample of 1,867 women were undertaken. As per the FDA the bill leads to similar side effects as the other pills available in the market.

Use of birth control pills lead to adverse effects like irregular bleeding, breast tenderness, headache, nausea and vomiting, weight gain and acne.

However, the manufacturers of Natazia claim that the pill can control the irregular bleeding making it different from the other pills.

The use of contraceptives have been around for more than 50 years and nearly 12 million women in U.S. resort to the use of oral contraception.

Still the dominant hope to have access to a fool proof method of oral contraception has still not been fulfilled.

From the oldest contraceptive Yasmin to the latest Natazia, all fight for the shelf space and claim to be safer that the other.

Yet the big question remains unanswered.
