Weight Loss Programs Could Reduce Risk of Diabetes

From the new study it was seen that periodical sessions of weight loss programs could help overweight or obese people to reduce the risk of diabetes.

It was found by the researchers that after following a 6 month Weight Watchers group program, overweight or obese adults who attended 66% of the weekly sessions lost weight, reduced glucose and insulin levels improved.

It was noted that the program included education on a low calorie diet, exercise and weekly group support sessions.

It was also noticed that the participants who attended regularly improved the most.

"We know that previous research programs have successfully reduced diabetes risk using intensive lifestyle treatment. But what we didn't know is that a program that costs appreciably much less than specially-designed diabetes prevention programs would have a profound impact on the same risk factors for type 2 diabetes. These findings could have important public health potential", said Kathleen Melanson, study co-author.

It was informed by the Centers for Disease Control that the total cost of treatment of diabetes in the United States was more than 200 billion dollars. This made treatment and prevention the main concern for healthcare experts.

It was told by the experts that with the individual lifestyle interventions could decrease the risk diabetes by more than 50%.
