Woman Wins Cancer Treatment Appeal

According to the reports, a woman suffering from breast cancer has won her appeal of funding against the Isle of Wight NHS Primary Care Trust.

As reported, Becky Smith, 30, from Ryde, had developed breast cancer which further spread to her liver and spine.

When she contacted the Isle of Wight NHS Primary Care Trust, she was blatantly told by the authorities that the trust would not pay for her expensive treatment. She further added that though the same treatment was available from trusts elsewhere.

Reports claim that a doctor from the trust had refused her the cancer treatment citing that it could prolong her life.

Following the incident, an appeal panel has granted her £23,000 for the treatment.

However, reports claim that the trust had refused to fund the treatment initially in March, as it had taken into account the fact that the treatment was still not approved by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence).

According to Dr. Jennifer Smith of the Isle of Wight NHS Primary Care Trust, the panel after examining the issues carefully said it was an exceptional case.

After winning the appeal, Ms. Becky said that,” I'm angry that this is not just me - this is happening all over the country. I think cancer patients anywhere should not have to fight for their treatment”.
