The Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, Michael Ephraim informed in at this week's launch of the PlayStation 3 movie download service said that Sony has sold more than 70,000 PlayTV boxes in Australia itself. This is encouraging news for the company. The figures are also helpful as Sony is working to place PlayStation 3 as a total entertainment solution
It is a $169 add-on which that converts PS3 into a digital TV Personal Video Recorder. Initially when Sony started offering the PlayTV it came as a part of bundle along with 250GB PS3.
If this information is taken into account, it means that every one in ten PS3 owners purchased a PlayTV. According to the announcement, Sony has managed to sell 850,000 PS3s in Australia.
These stats are noticeable as PS3 is merely a primarily a games console.
Also Ephraim said out of the total number sold, 36,000 were sold during the last six weeks of 2009 and this crowned PlayTV as the top-selling PVR for the entire year of 2009. The source of the figures was not disclosed.
The released figures and the amount of demand make it clear that PS3 owners are serious about their entertainment. In the launch, it was stated by Ephraim that PlayTV is to provide "global domination" to Sony and that the main aim is to "position the PlayStation 3 as the ultimate home entertainment device".
