With the acquisition of General Electric Co.'s Universal Pictures Rogue Pictures, a film label producing low-budget films, by Relativity Media LLC, it is a clear signal that major Hollywood studios are shifting away from the specialty movie business.
Media and entertainment firm - Relativity Media, film financier for both Universal and Sony Corp. has reportedly paid $150-million for Rogue, in a deal that includes Rogue's entire library, producing deals and over 30-under development projects, releasing supernatural horror film 'The Unborn' on 9th January, its first release after the acquisition of Rogue Pictures.
Rogue's successful horror films, so impressed Ryan Kavanaugh, CEO of Relativity that he decided to acquire it and expand upon Rogue's success in genre of space horror.
Since, smaller, independent films seem to stumble at the box office, which shows a preference for big franchise films over serious adult fare, Universal, like other major studios decided to unload one of its film labels. For example, last year we saw Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. off-loading Warner Independent and PictureHouse, while Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures absorbed major operations of Paramount Vantage, its specialty division, Paramount Vantage, into its main studio.
