Facebook Blocked in Pakistan

A controversial page on Facebook that lead to ban on Facebook in Pakistan has been removed now. It was promoting "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day", which was being promoted by an American cartoonist. A suggestion was given that encouraged people to draw images of the prophet to promote free speech. It attracted a lot of followers.

But the page was removed on Friday. Facebook reported to the Associated Press that they had not taken any action. It was most likely removed by its creator but it is still not clear why the page was removed.

A blog was also without any content on Friday and it was also supporting “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" and was renamed after featuring various caricatures of Mohammed earlier in the week.

An association of lawyers in Pakistan argued that the contest is like promoting blasphemy and was stopped by a court. As a result of this, Facebook was banned in Pakistan. The country also banned YouTube over "sacrilegious" content.

Pakistan also stressed that if the offending material was removed it would consider revoking the ban. There were also a lot of protests in Pakistan this week due to these caricatures. Protestors also demonstrated and burned U. S. flags in the protests.

A New York based website also warned creators of this series to face serious consequences for their actions.
