Intel is working towards building up its software and services offerings, with the aim of expanding its accomplishment into smartphones as well as the consumer electronics markets. A Gartner analyst shared that Advanced Micro Devices, the fellow competitor will be un-equipped to extort the former's market share.
Intel wanted to provide a more complete solution for its customers, and to become less dependent on third-party vendors, which led it to initiate the making of software, according to Christian Heidarson, principal research analyst at research firm. They had to depend a lot especially in the smartphones and consumer electronics markets.
Intel has a "great high-margin business" selling chips, and the returns from software and services are trivial as compared with its hardware revenue, shared the analyst.
Heidarson said, "In markets, Intel's software and services offerings are comparable to its chipset business in PCs. These offerings allow Intel to offer a more complete solution to companies wanting to reduce their research and development overheads".
He added that this push up stack will make Intel less dependant on third parties for important components of the platform and this way it can control its own destiny.
The analyst stated that this plan may not be adequate to see the company make a way into the smartphones or tablet PC markets.
