A desperate bid has been set by the parents of Bronx baby, to save their daughter's life after she was diagnosed with a rare blood disease that can only be cured with a bone marrow transplant.
Sophia Lopez was only 10 weeks old, when doctors discovered, she suffered from hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.
Chemotherapy though had sent the disease into remission, but it returned in April. The baby, now 6 months old, needs to locate a matching donor to stay alive.
No one in Sophia's family is an ideal match. Her situation is complicated further, because she is of Puerto Rican descent and Latinos make up only 10% of the bone marrow registry.
Sophia's big brothers have created a YouTube video to raise awareness of their sister's plight. A donor drive is being held Saturday from 10 a. m. to 4 p. m. at Public School 71 at 3040 Roberts Ave. in the Bronx.
"We're hoping that all we need is this one drive to find her a donor," Sophia's mother, Denise Lopez, 33, said.
