Canadian Kids Suffers from High Blood Pressure

It has been found through the Statistics Canada's Canadian Health Measure Survey that rates of high blood pressure among Canadian kids and teenagers are very low. The report of the survey says that 0.8% Canadians aged 6 to 19 have high blood pressure, whereas 2.1% have borderline high levels.

The survey was conducted amongst the 2,100 children across the country. Same kind of survey had also been conducted in the year 1978 that sought to define national rates of blood pressure among Canadian children.

The average systolic blood pressure that means the top number of reading on a blood pressure was considerably higher among boys and girls, who are obese, predominantly among girls aged 6 to 11 and boys aged 12 to 19. However, if we talk about diastolic bold pressure means the lower number which measures pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest was predominantly higher among obese boys aged 12 to 19.

"And despite a trend toward excess weight among youth in other countries, BP levels have not shown consistent increases. Hence, population-level increases in BP may not necessarily be a consequence of rising weight," said Dr. Gilles Paradis, a professor of public health at McGill University. But the professors are somewhat confused by their own findings. According to the professors more study is required to explain the perceptible paradox.
