According to the reports of the Malaysian AIDS Council, in the recent years there has been a sharp rise in the number of HIV infected cases among women.
Reports claim that the lack of awareness I women and more so amongst the women in rural areas is the primarily reason for the accelerated growth of the HIV Virus.
Confirming the results of the report, Prof. Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman, President of the Malaysian AIDS Council said that HIV infection in women had risen from 9.4% in 2000 to 19.1 % in 2008.
She further said that though most of the cases are due to drug addiction that uses needles but heterosexual relationships had also contributed heavily for the rise.
According To Dr. Adeeba,"The lack of understanding and awareness of HIV and AIDS has resulted in rural folks with the HIV virus, being isolated from the community, and also resulted in an increase of such infection among children”.
Highlighting the fact, that the medical practitioners also had reservations while treating HIV carriers, Dr. Adeeba said that the sad situation further created difficulties in treating the HIV cases efficiently.
According to her the isolated groups such as the drug addicts, sex workers, transvestites and homosexuals ought to be treated with care in order to restrain the spread of HIV cases from spreading.
Despite the rise of HIV cases in women, Dr. Adeeba claimed that the overall situation however, has witnessed a drop in the number of cases HIV/AIDS. She attributes the drop to the numerous preventive measures and awareness programs that have been carried out by the government and Non Governmental Organizations (NGO).
