According to the reports, an alarming increase in the suicides has forced the authorities to scrutinize the Foxconn manufacturing model.
With the low wages and low land prices, Hon Hai or Foxconn, also took charge of not just the labor of the workers but also of their entire lives. The migrant workers were housed and were also fed on campus.
It is believed that, the plant is the largest in the world and has 300,000 workers. The privileges helped Mr. Gou in transforming Foxconn into the world's largest electronics contract manufacturer by a very large margin.
In the wake of the alarming rise of suicides among workers, there is widespread debate that the prevalent manufacturing model of Foxconn is no longer fit to deal with the pressures of the modern Chinese society.
Reports suggest that since China which is outside Foxconn's factory gates has undergone dramatic changes over the past two decades, the old model is no longer effective.
Experts believe that the workforce in China has also experienced a wide change. According to them, the new generation workers are very different from the ones that helped Mr. Gou.
They claim that the mindset of the workers has undergone a tremendous change as twenty years ago workers would consider a factory job, a chance of a lifetime. The facilities of food and accommodation also made the offer irresistible.
But in the current scenario, 90% of the workforce at Foxconn's is between 18 and 24 years old and are born after the economic reforms of China.
Due to the changes, the workers are frustrated and are resorting to suicides.
