A private hospital in Melbourne confirmed that three old aged patients have been infected by deadly bacteria. The health experts have predicted that the bacteria are likely to replicate and become more and more widespread.
Epworth Hospital Executive Medical Director, Megan Robertson said this hypervirulent strain of Clostridium difficile has been detected in Australia.
The deadly stomach virus has so far, caused thousands of deaths in North America and Europe.
Dr. Robertson explained that it's tough to conduct all the tests in Australia. "The hypervirulent strain is quite difficult to get tested in Australia, and in fact we had to send our specimens to a laboratory in Western Australia", he added.
The virus needs to be tamed as early as possible as it is spreading abruptly and is essentially infectious, she opined.
Two of the infected patients have been given discharge from the hospital while the third is still under observation.
Although, the virus has the tendency of transmitting from person to person, there are no evidences of any such links in the three infected patients.
The infection essentially hits elderly people who are already suffering from some other problems.
