Warnings have been sent out by the Queensland University of Technology's (QUT) researchers that generally, Australians are unsuccessful to blanket up adequately in winters, and the added strain that places on the body could be lethal.
"We are not very good at protecting ourselves against the cold weather, we don't wear the right sort of clothes in winter and our homes are often not well insulated," said Dr. Adrian Barnett, from QUT's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation.
According to Dr. Barnett, veins and arteries became constricted in the cold, leading to rise in blood pressure which stressed the heart more and circulatory system.
Statistics revealed that the threat of winters was more on Australians compared with the effect of frosty winters on people in Finland and Sweden.
Aged people were predominantly at danger because they were weaker and their insight of the cold could weaken, leaving them inadvertently uncovered.
He also said that wearing more clothes, like thermals, hats, gloves and slippers was the way out and not cranking up the heater.
