Australian researchers have invented a way of avoiding falls in old aged people who wear bifocals or other "multifocus" lens glasses. The team has created lens distance glasses which help them focus well whenever they move out.
Although, multifocus glasses ease both close and distant vision, but, it has been found that when the elderly people wear them outside, they are a high risk of falling. The chances of fall are greatest when they climb the stairs.
The reason provided for this connection between the multi-focus glasses and falls is that the glasses impair distant depth perception, which leads to balance impairment.
Prof. Stephen Lord, of the fall and Balance Research Group, Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute in Sydney said that the new bifocal glasses will work best for those oldies who need to travel every week.
"This is the group where we saw the 40 percent reduction in falls over the year. It is less effective, and may even contribute to outside falls in frail older people who only occasionally go outside," he noted.
He accepted that a second pair comes at a very high cost but the single lens glasses are relatively less costly than multifocal glasses.
