Scribner seals deal for publishing Laura Bush’s memoirs

After prevailing in an auction that involved several publishers, Scribner - an imprint of publishing giant Simon & Shuster - said on Monday that according to its recent deal with First lady Laura Bush, it will be publishing her memoirs. Scribner's publisher and executive vice president, Susan Moldow, settled the agreement with Washington lawyer Robert Barnett.

The book, which is expected to be published in 2010, will include Laura Bush's her reminiscences of her eight-year experience in the White House, historical moments that she has been a part of, and her other personal experiences.

Moldow said: "As a rare witness to the private moments of one of our country's most consequential presidencies, her memoir will provide a candid and personal perspective, and an enduring record, of the years that have already determined the course of the 21st century."

Even though the First lady's press secretary, Sally McDonough, refused to disclose how much Bush is being paid for the book, going by similar deals in the past that involved first ladies, a multimillion-dollar payout would be in the offing. Laura Bush would be working with an associate, who, McDonough said is still to be named.

Bush has not yet started working on the untitled book, but the project, nonetheless, is high priority for her and she would likely start off after she leaves the White House, in order to meet the publishing date in 2010.
