Too Much Vitamin D is Harmful

Everyone agrees that Vitamin D is very important for health but recent research indicates that taking too much of vitamin D may be harmful for the health. Researchers confirmed that taking Vitamin D could have some disadvantages.

Researchers from the University of Melbourne in Australia studied 2,256 women aged 70 and older to see if giving them a huge dose of Vitamin D once a year would reduce their risk of falls and fractures. They were surprised to find that the women who received higher dose of Vitamin D experienced 15% more falls and 26% more fractures compared to those who got a placebo.

Experts feel that taking a very high dose of Vitamin D may have lead the body to produce less amount of Vitamin D which may have caused weak bones and increased falls and fractures.

High doses of Vitamin D are also used to treat osteoporosis patients. It was earlier though that high doses of this Vitamin will decrease falls and fractures.

Experts are also very surprised with this research. It is felt that taking a daily dose of 500 to 1000 (international units of vitamin D) is still safe.

Many felt that other forms of treatment needed to deal with diseases like osteoporosis need to be developed.
