NDP Accused of Failing OxyContin Addicts

The Selinger Government witnessed a huge criticism for the second day in a row Wednesday for its handling of treatment services offered to people addicted to the prescription painkiller OxyContin.

The resignation of Dr. Lindy Lee as the Director of the addiction unit at Health Sciences Centre triggered questions from Tories and Liberals questioned against NDP.

Lee posted Free Press that she resigned because she was tired plugging the holes looking into the soaring demand for opiate-addiction services along with a lack of backing from health officials.

"It's a very significant indication of major problems with the program," Tory Leader Hugh McFadyen quoted of Lee's resignation. "It's obviously a crisis. It's a situation that should be getting a higher priority from the government".

Liberal Leader Jon Gerrard believes that Lee's resignation depicts that the government has misconstrued the extent of OxyContin abuse. He uncovered that people are dying -- estimated about 25 people over the past few years -- while they wait to get into a treatment program.

Healthy Living Minister Jim Rondeau praised Lee for her work, hoping that she stays in Manitoba. However, gain said that his Government is undertaking huge efforts to address opiate addiction.
