For most of the children bicycles, scooters, skateboards and inline skates are an important part of life. These help kids to stay active and healthy and easily get around their neighborhoods and communities.
But like any other form of transportation they also have some risks. In Canada, head injuries are the biggest cause of serious injury and death in the children. It is very important that children who use any of these should wear a helmet.
British Columbia was the first province in Canada to require bicyclists of all ages to wear a CSA-approved helmet. The Government also supports the BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit. The unit is a leader in the injury prevention field.
A campaign is being run by Safe Kids Canada in promoting helmet safety. This year's Safe Kids Week theme - Got Wheels? Get a Helmet. This is the largest annual national child injury prevention awareness campaign in Canada.
Interior Health (IH) is also trying to spread the message of safety during Safe Kids Week, taking place May 31 - June 5.
Experts stress that a properly fitted helmet helps protects the brain in the event of an injury. It also reduces the chances of serious head injury by 85%.
It is very important to wear a helmet while cycling. Parents also need to ensure that children wear a helmet when they ride anything.
