License of Vancouver pharmacy of cancelled

Authorities have cancelled license of a Downtown Eastside pharmacy. The College of Pharmacists found that the pharmacy was violating "medicine management" issues involving patient safety.

AYC will operate under reduced hours so drug users can find another methadone provider until shutting on December 1. Investigation revealed that it provided cash incentives to addicts filling methadone prescriptions. A pharmacist giving $5 to a customer filling a prescription for Tylenol 3 at AYC was captured by CBC hidden camera.

Ministry of Health is also investigating the pharmacy. According to charges, pharmacy provided drug addicts with cash inducements to fill methadone prescriptions.

B.C. pharmacies are paid $8.60 each time they dispense a drug. If pharmacies dispense methadone and supervise the patient as they take it, they receive an additional $7.70 along with the fixed $8.60 they get for dispensing the drug.

Under the province's PharmaCare regulations, it is illegal if the pharmacists offer cash or other incentives, including air miles, loyalty points or bus passes, to methadone users, or to advertise drugs.
