It has been claimed by the American scientists that they have successfully developed a vaccine for preventing breast cancer in mice. The findings of these researchers have been published in the journal Nature.
The researchers will be experiment the same drug in humans soon. The vaccine will probably take a few years before the vaccine is made available.
According to immunologists involved in the research, the vaccine mainly affects protein that is present in breast tumors.
Expressing optimism, Vincent Tuohy stated that the vaccine in coming few years will be used to prevent breast cancer in adult women just like the vaccines that effectively prevented many childhood diseases till now.
Tuohy also added that if the vaccine proves fruitful in humans, it will be a great achievement and will help in eradicate breast cancer completely.
When the study was conducted, genetically cancer-prone mice were treated with the vaccine.
Some mice were given vaccine containing á-lactalbumin antigen and others a vaccine without it.
It was then found that none of the mice who were treated with á-lactalbumin developed breast cancer and on the other hand, other mice did.
But there prevails a possibility that, as cancer is caused due to “over-development” of the body's cells, vaccinate against this cell over-growth will probably affect healthy tissue.
