WSQ Program Helping Workers

A lot of workers who have received training are increasingly changing jobs. This was confirmed by the Government which stressed that the national training scheme is helping to equip people with new and relevant skills.

Almost 30% 0f the workers who had received Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) training had changed jobs as compared to 20% of the workers who did not receive this training. This was reported in a Government study of labor mobility and was done from June 2007 and June 2009.

The study also revealed that Workforce Skills Qualification training program had improved the chances for low-skills workers to find better jobs and move up the career ladder. It also found that workers like cleaners and laborers who received this training were now employed as clerical or craftsmen in the services sector.

This was found from a study done on 36,000 workers as part of the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) report. It found the workers who had changed jobs during the last two year period when the study was underway. These workers had also participated in the last year's labor force survey.

The Government has been highly satisfied with these results and is trying to encourage this program. Since the program was launched in 2005, almost 400,000 workers have attended WSQ courses.
