Regina Qu'Appelle to Have Publically Funded CT Scan Services

In an attempt to reduce the wait times in private health centers, Saskatchewan Party Government has decided to fund these centers for advancing the CT scan procedure, thereby reducing the time consumed in it.

Health Minister Don McMorris proclaimed that the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region has put forth a proposal for inviting a ‘third party supplier’ who could provide CT services in a publicly funded, private facility to be established in 2011.

At present, the three scanners operating at two Regina hospitals show an efficiency of performing 75,000 scans in a year by running 7 days. There are 1,100 people on the waiting list.

"We feel this is an opportunity to use a third party deliverer to expand the capacity in this area. But it's very important to understand that this is still within the publicly funded system,” said McMorris.

However, NDP Health Critic Judy Junior opined that the Government is inclining towards the private sector heavily. He said that the Government is planning to privatize whole of the healthcare system.

McMorris clarified that using a third party to perform CT scans is similar to using the third parties deliver X-rays under the publicly funded system.
