On Tuesday, more than 300 students belonging to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi took on a hunger strike, remonstrating against "lack" of basic facilities within college and hostel campuses, but medical services in general remained unmoved.
However, the hospital authorities dread that the services will be influenced with resident doctors, actively engaged in patient care, intimidating to join the strike.
Karan, an MBBS student, who participated in the strike, said that their demands have not been catered to as yet. Necessary facilities such as water, ceiling fan, water cooler and clean toilet are not provided in the hostel.
This is the second time in the last one month that the pupils have gone on a strike. On May 3, the students had demonstrated a road barrier on Ring Road to ask for basic infrastructure facilities.
In the meantime, resident doctors warned to join the remonstration if the authorities were unsuccessful in meeting the demands of the MBBS pupils.
Resident Doctor Association President, Dr. Chandra Bhan said, "We will join the medical students in their strike if their demands are not met".
Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr. N K Mohanty asked the resident physicians not to take part in the strike because it will have an effect on patient care.
He said that if they do it, stern action as per the rules and regulations will be taken.
