Wellington's Weta Digital has helped New Zealand to make a heavy impact in the global measure of world's fastest computers. A data calculating discussion in Hamburg, Germany, has unveiled TOP500, which is the list of world's fastest computers. In this, New Zealand made the overall grade.
Ranked at 279, 280, 281, 282, 283 and 413, were the computer systems by Weta Digital, and they were the ones which were used to put together Avatar, by James Cameron. Besides this, there was only one more entry from New Zealand that ranked 434th. It was the National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research.
Hewlett Packard Cluster Platform 3000BL was seen as the fastest computer by Weta as it scuttles on Linux. The speed with which it is measured is "floating point operations per second" which is 31527.8 GFlops.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States topped the TOP500 list which specializes in running virtual digital nuclear explosions on the computer. The Jaguar Cray XT5-HE computer that runs on Linux performs these functions at a momentum faster than 1.759 petaFLOPS (one quadrillion calculations per second).
These high-performance computers are designed for manufacturers and prospective users, according to the University. It says, "These people wish to know not only the number of systems installed, but also the location of the various supercomputers within the high-performance computing community and the applications for which a computer system is being used".
