Twilight based on Stephanie Meyer's vampire romance novels, about Bella Swan (Kirsten Stewart), a sweet high school student falling in love with sexy vampire (Robert Pattinson), proving reckless, forbidden love affairs have the power to draw in a young-adult audience. Grossing an estimated $70.6 million over the weekend, Twilight instantly joined the exclusive Hollywood club of movies that earn a profit within 3-days of their domestic release.
Knocking out Bolt, Disney's very expensive animated film ($27-million) featuring the voices of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus to third place, Twilight despite lukewarm reviews is 2008's biggest surprise blockbuster, opening at top spot in the box office. The latest James Bond flick 'Quantum of Solace' has taken second place, trailed by Bolt and 'Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa' (DreamWorks Animation) coming in fourth ($16 million), and Universal's 'Role Models' rounding up the Top Five with $7.2 million.
Amongst the Top Ten are: Angelina Jolie's 'Changeling' ($2.6 million), 'High School Musical 3' ($2 million), 'The Secret Life of Bees' ($1.2 million), limited-release Oscar hopefuls 'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas' at No. 9 ($1.6 million) and Boyle's 'Slumdog Millionaire' scheduled to enter the Top Ten next week, due to its huge per-screen average of $31,063, nearly 50% more than the total for 'Twilight'.
