Businesses Get More Powers of Copyright

The Conservative Government is amending the Copyright Legislation. The new law will permit consumers to copy the content for personal use and it also expands the power of businesses to prevent their work from being copied. The same can be done by digitally locking the product.

On the other hand, the Government can imply heavy fines for copying the digitally locked products. The fines can be up to a million dollars and five years in jail.

The bill is going to invite a debate, by its self contradictory aspect. "If I lock my door and I say 'Go in and use the fridge', the moment you break my lock, you're breaking and entering, even if I say 'Once you're in the house, you can use my fridge", said Toronto-based copyright lawyer Sheldon Burshtein. Those opposing the digital locks say that this is an obstacle for doing research, since it's not always possible to purchase the material.

By this law even the reporters won't be able to use the copyrighted material in news reporting.

The amended law would permit to copy songs on your PC from an original compact disc and it won't be illegal. One can also record the programs on TV that can be watched later on.

The companies cannot sue the individual for copying the product, if the same is for personal use. However, the current law of Copyright does not differentiate between the personal and professional use.
