Caffeine Alertness Effects Are ‘Just an Illusion’: Research

For all the caffeine lovers, who just can’t seem to kick off their day without the cup coffee, the new research is a big eye opener.

According to the University of Bristol U. K. researchers, the stimulating effects of caffeine are nothing more than an illusion. They claim that the alertness has nothing to do with caffeine; it is all in the minds of the people.

In the study, the researchers studied 162 non/low and 217 medium/high caffeine consumers in England, to adjudge whether the habitual caffeine intake moderates alertness, anxiety and headache.

The participants were made to give up caffeine for 16 hours. Following the same, the researchers gave them either caffeine or a dummy pill, which is known as a placebo.

The participants of the study reported their anxiety levels, headache and alertness before taking the caffeine and after taking the caffeine.

After the ratings of the participants on their levels of anxiety, alertness and headache, it was observed that the medium/high caffeine consumers who got the placebo reported a decrease in alertness and increased headache. However, neither of the same was reported by those who received caffeine.

The measurements revealed that their post-caffeine levels of alertness were no higher than the non/low consumers, who had received a placebo.

Following the study, the researchers concluded that although frequent consumers felt alerted by caffeine, particularly by their morning tea, coffee, or other caffeine-containing drink; however, the evidence suggests that the in actual same it is simply the reversal of the fatiguing effects of acute caffeine withdrawal.

But for caffeine lovers, illusion or not- the wake up coffee is still a must.
