People opting for the noble cause of organ donation will be offered a free taxi ride. This will be done under a new campaign launched in London by the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT).
On Wednesday, people who will register themselves for the Organ Donation Register (ODR) would be riding for free in the cab.
It is known that presently, 1,838 patients in London require an organ transplant and that on average, three people on daily basis die because of the complications which require a suitable organ. Since, the first organ was transplanted in US in 1950s; there has always been a shortage of donor organs than the need for the same.
In the campaign, out of 20,000 black cabs in the capital, the NHSBT's Lift for Life black cab will be providing the free trips.
Thanking the donors, Sally Johnson, Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation, said that people who have signed up in the Organ Donation Register must encourage their friends and families so that they can also contribute for saving other people’s lives.
Johnson said that London has experienced an increase in the number of donors; however, there is a need for many more.
He said that even if people do not come across the Organ Donation cab, they should still sign up in the Organ Donation Register as the earliest possible.
