Crocodiles Surf Seas to Travel Long Distances

A research has found that crocodiles surf ocean currents to travel large distances in the sea. It has also found that these animals travel large distances by riding on sea waves. Crocodiles are normally not very fond of swimming and their large size also makes it difficult for them to swim long distances.

These animals can grow up to 20 feet in size and use the ocean currents just like the experienced surfers, to cross long distances in the sea. The latest study began in the year 2002 from Australia’s Queensland state. The study was undertaken by Hamish Campbell, an ecologist from Australia’s University of Queensland.

As part of the study, 27 adult crocodiles were tagged in Kennedy River in remote Queensland. To track the movement of these reptiles, sonar transmitters and underwater receivers were also used over the next one year.

Hamish stressed that the study’s results took him by surprise. He found eight of these reptiles had taken long journeys from the river to the sea. He pointed that after analyzing the data, it was revealed that these reptiles were mostly following the ocean currents.

He also found that a crocodile had swam almost 600 kilometers in 25 days to reach another river. He stayed there for seven months before returning to his earlier habitat.

It was also highlighted that ocean currents can carry these reptiles across hundreds of miles. The study also helped understand how these crocodiles are found in various countries.
